California State University, Dominguez Hills, or CSUDH for short, is a public university located in Carson, which is a city in Los Angeles County, in the US state of California, with a population estimated at a number of more than 90 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Carson is situated 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and it is recognized as a suburb of the city. The city was incorporated in February, 1968, fact which makes it the youngest municipality in the South Bay region of Greater Los Angeles.
CSUDH was founded in 1960, with the help of then Governor of California Pat Brown, who provided state funds that made the school's creation possible, and it was first known as South Bay State College, the institution adopting its current name in 1977, when the California Postsecondary Education Commission made the college trustees' desire to change the name of the school possible, changing it from California State College, Dominguez Hills.
Today, California State University, Dominguez Hills has an enrollment of over 13 000 students, being among the most racially diverse campuses in the United States, offering 45 undergraduate majors, 22 master's degrees, and a number of certificate and credential programs, in various fields of study, including a distance learning program in California, which offers students an opportunity to earn ten academic degrees and seven academic certificates without ever coming to campus.
Athletics
CSUDH's athletic teams are known as the Toros, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, including in men's soccer, in which they won their 2nd national NCAA Division II championship, in 2008, against Dowling College, and in other sports, for both men and women, such as basketball, volleyball, cross country and golf, overall, CSUDH fielding 10 sports for men and women for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. The distinctive colors of the Toros are cardinal red and gold.
